GEO Monitoring: Which AI models should you monitor?

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot: The list of systems suitable for AI monitoring is growing longer. Many companies decide surprisingly subjectively. But does that really help?

More models do not automatically mean a better data basis. Sometimes the exact opposite happens. Costs also play a role in the decision.

In the podcast, we discuss our criteria and show an example monitoring with the AI system Claude. Our goal: Your AI Visibility Monitoring should be meaningful and efficient at the same time.

AI models in monitoring: This is often the starting point

Gut feeling instead of criteria

Companies often choose their models based on gut feeling or individual opinions. Following the motto “Our developers all use Claude” or “our CEO uses Perplexity.” Clear criteria are rare. AI visibility tools also offer limited help. They often provide all AI systems. For providers, it is even more economically attractive if as many models as possible are selected, because this increases usage and thus costs.

Distorted data basis

Anyone who includes five models in their monitoring distributes visibility equally across all five – regardless of the actual market share. A niche model with only 1-2% actual market share is suddenly represented with 20% or more. This distorts the entire AI visibility. Both in terms of brand mentions and source analysis. While it is possible to filter by models, not everyone necessarily does so.

Different costs

Each AI system costs a different amount in monitoring. For example, Claude is about six times more expensive per query than other systems. So, those who integrate expensive models have to pay more – or monitor fewer prompts. Furthermore, the question arises whether the results differ so significantly from one another. Or whether, for example, you automatically optimize for Claude as well when working on your AI model visibility.

Example: Claude monitoring in the software sector

For an example, we used our own AI Visibility Tool JOE and developed a monitoring case from the software sector (project management software). For the prompt queries, we added Claude alongside ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews. We then compared the AI responses, brand mentions, and sources. We conducted a one-time GEO check.

The result: Similar brands are ahead in all four models, albeit in different positions. Some companies are stronger in individual AI systems. Awork, for example, only appears in Claude, while other providers like Factro or Wrike appear more in Google and ChatGPT. There is also a certain difference in the sources: Claude partially relies on different domains than ChatGPT or Google; among other things, the search behind it apparently runs via Brave. The AI response layout is very similar. Similar follow-up questions are asked – important for the prompts you choose.

Our conclusion: Brand mentions are more similar across models than one would expect. Those who are ahead in one system usually appear high up in the others as well. In contrast, a closer look at the sources is worthwhile. The differences here may be larger. However, this depends on the individual case.

Generally speaking: If you optimize for ChatGPT and Google’s AI systems, you also cover Claude to a large extent. Whether you want to go into detail with Claude is a case-by-case decision, for which you must then plan the budget for GEO monitoring accordingly. More on this in the episode and in the video.

Conclusion & further aspects from the episode

In the end, two criteria remain: market share and the question of whether working on a model is really worth it for your own company. Anyone who takes both seriously usually arrives at a lean set of two to three systems.

More models do not solve the problem; they can even exacerbate problems. Every additional system costs budget that is then missing elsewhere, such as for more prompts or a deeper analysis. Less is actually more here.

Nevertheless, it is worth looking at the model level. The sources sometimes differ significantly between systems, even if brand mentions are often similar. If you only look at the overall overview, you will miss this.

Most importantly: Monitoring is not an end in itself. Concrete measures should follow from the data, related to your own company and your own market. Only when a measure has visibly achieved something in the tool has the model selection truly paid off.

Other topics we discuss:

  • Why the way Claude is used determines whether monitoring is even worth it
  • Why we removed Perplexity from our monitoring months ago
  • Why the market share calculation is more complicated than it looks at first glance
  • Which search engine is behind Claude’s answers

Our Conversations with SEO and GEO Professionals

We Advise Marketing Managers on SEO & GEO

For anyone seeking an SEO sparring partner or comprehensive SEO consulting, Fabian and Benjamin are the perfect choice. As an in-house SEO expert, I sought competent SEO support and found it with them. During a very pleasant introductory meeting, we jointly developed an approach to establish SEO among the individual stakeholders and thereby gain more internal visibility for the subject. Based on this initial discussion and a joint kick-off with the stakeholders, they developed a sound SEO and content strategy for a product area. Since then, they have both supported me as sparring partners during implementation.

The collaboration with Fabian and Benjamin is a great pleasure for me and all project participants, as they are masters of their craft and bring immense passion for SEO. This combination is infectious and motivates everyone to achieve peak performance.

I look back with great satisfaction on the SEO project that we carried out with Benjamin and Fabian. Firstly, the collaboration was on a very pleasant, goal-oriented level. Secondly, the consultation was structured in such a way that we could immediately start with the implementation. We received very concrete optimization suggestions that were tailored to our internal capacities and therefore realistically implementable. Even though only a few months have passed, we can already see the first results of our work in the Google rankings. Traffic for our relevant keywords is steadily increasing, and we still have enough concrete work packages from Benjamin in the pipeline to boost our site. Furthermore, through the consultation, we have acquired so much internal SEO know-how that we can now optimize our site independently. And most importantly: Visitor numbers have doubled – with correspondingly positive effects on sales.
