How can we use a concrete example to show how optimization for increased AI visibility works? And in a realistic environment? We asked ourselves this and set up our own project.

The goal: We want to increase the AI visibility of J.O.E., our own AI Visibility Tool. And we want to do it in an environment full of well-funded, large tool providers.

The result: We increased our AI visibility from 6.8% to 46.7%. In 7 days.

Unclear effort

Many marketing teams understand that AI visibility is becoming increasingly relevant now and in the future. Nevertheless, they do not start working on it. The main reason: The effort required is unclear. What exactly needs to be done—and how long does it take? Often there are also many different recommendations, but it is unclear which measure actually delivers how much value.

Unclear goals

Goals are also often not yet clarified internally. Brand mentions are a new KPI. But how this is specifically implemented and measured for one’s own company is often unclear. Usually, there is also a lack of a monitoring tool including systematic prompt research. This makes it difficult to communicate clearly to management why you want to work on it.

Unclear prospects of success

“Do we even have a chance?” Many marketing managers in SEO have asked themselves this question. Our practical experience: You always have a chance—if you work on it. This is now also evident in Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). After all, we are an absolute underdog in the market for AI visibility tools—and yet we have built up AI visibility for ourselves.

The result of our GEO Case Study

For our case study, we focused on transactional prompts. Specifically, it is about the term “AI Visibility Tool,” which already has a high Google search volume in the USA and is also being searched for more frequently in Germany. The click prices for this on Google Ads are high. It is therefore a valuable keyword—an approach that is always important to us in our SEO & GEO consulting.

Accordingly, we took the prompt “I am looking for an AI visibility tool” as a base prompt. That is, a fully formulated sentence. We combined this with the criteria that are relevant to users and that our tool offers as a feature. Example: “I am looking for an AI visibility tool for a competitive analysis.” We describe the approach behind this in more detail here: How does prompt research work?

Subsequently, we:

  • Identified our content gaps in AI Monitoring
  • Analyzed relevant sources in AI Monitoring
  • Published new landing pages in a targeted manner
  • Revised and updated existing articles
  • Developed and updated YouTube content
  • Published a guest article on an external platform

We implemented all of this in a short time after a preparation phase.

The result:

After just three days, the first new landing pages could be seen in the monitoring. AI systems such as AI Mode, Perplexity, and ChatGPT accessed our newly created or optimized content and included it in their AI responses.

Our AI visibility increased from 6.8 percent to 46.7 percent. Within one week.

Our personal conclusion

Focus on performance

In our consulting, we focus on performance approaches. This means: We want to generate AI visibility in an environment where customers ask AI systems for products and specific recommendations. This focus on business-relevant optimization has the highest impact—and is effective at the same time. This is because numerous general guide topics are answered by AI systems themselves without naming a brand or a source.

GEO can be fast

It is often assumed that optimization for AI systems takes a very long time. But our example shows: Exactly the opposite can happen. GEO, i.e., optimization for AI visibility, only took a few days. AI systems react very quickly to changes. Often even much faster than was the case in SEO.

SEO & GEO craftsmanship

AI optimization is not rocket science—on the contrary. Many measures known from SEO also work very well in GEO. Creating specific content, updating existing content, ensuring good indexing, multilingualism—we already know all of this from SEO. Conversely, this also means: Anyone working on their AI visibility is often working on their SEO visibility at the same time. You kill two birds with one stone.
